These lovely hand-carved white birch spoons were made with lots of help from volunteers. They were part of the ceramic and fiber creations at the CraftStudies Bowl Fest, a fundraiser to support the organization. Volunteers and spoon making workshop participants contributed to the production by roughing out 150 spoon blanks in a single day from freshly harvested white birch using traditional tools such as the hatchet, shaving horse, draw knife, spoke shave, Japanese saw, and stock knife (a Welsh clog-making tool). Later, folks gathered twice more to help carve, lightly hand-sand, milk paint, and oil so many spoons. Thank you to everyone, including our daughters, who helped contribute to this project, and to the ongoing creativity-affirming work of CraftStudies.
